The Graduate School will hold two hooding ceremonies for 2023-2024 Ph.D. graduates at Duke Chapel (401 Chapel Drive) on May 11, 2024: May 11, 10:00-11:30 a.m. Ph.D. Hooding Ceremony for Graduates in the Humanities and Social Sciences

The hooding ceremony is a unique recognition of the achievement of each student who has earned a doctorate or final master’s degree. Each doctoral candidate is introduced individually during the ceremony.

Our doctoral hooding ceremony will recognize these accomplishments. The ceremony will take place on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at the Dean E. Smith Center. We welcome family members, friends, and anyone else you would like to invite.

The Graduate School hosted an in-person PhD and MFA hooding ceremony on Friday, June 13, 2025 at 2:00 PM in Ryan Fieldhouse (2333 Campus Drive, Evanston, IL 60208) on the north end of the Evanston campus to the east of Lincoln Street and Sheridan Road.

The University Ph.D. Recognition Ceremony will be held on Friday, May 23 at 6:00 p.m. at Barton Hall. At this event, we will celebrate and recognize the significant achievements of doctoral PhD, JSD, and DMA graduates from August ’24, December ’24, and expected May ’25 and August ’25.

Feb 7, 2025 · The doctoral hooding ceremony takes place at commencement during which doctoral candidates are recognized and hooded, symbolizing the completion of their doctoral program. All doctoral candidates participating in commencement must choose a hooder to hood them during the ceremony.

This ceremony offers doctoral degree recipients, along with faculty mentors, a special opportunity to celebrate their achievement in a university-wide setting. The ceremony will include comments from campus leaders, with deans from each college and school present to congratulate students on their achievements.

Summer (September) 2025 graduates will be invited to participate in the 2026 TGS Hooding Ceremony next June. All other PhD graduates, along with TGS master of arts (MA), master of science (MS), and master of public health (MPH) graduates, are included in the ceremonies of their home program schools.

Apr 4, 2024 · Each PhD and EdD graduate are invited to participate in the doctoral hooding ceremony. The SOE regalia website is available for candidate’s orders. All orders must be placed by April 4, 2024. Custom orders are due March 15, 2025. GradImages will take pictures of each graduate as they are hooded on stage and as they exit the stage.

All graduating doctoral students and their families are invited to this formal academic event held in Gaston Hall, located on the third floor of Healy Hall. Academic regalia (cap, gown, hood) is required to participate.
