Marine experts have given up hope of rescuing more than 150 false killer whales that stranded on a remote beach on Australia’s island state of Tasmania.

After 157 false killer whales were stranded on a Tasmanian beach, experts said only 90 have survived. Following a few failed "refloating" attempts to return the whales to the sea, the remaining survivors are expected to be euthanized.

More than 150 false killer whales have been stranded on a remote beach in Tasmania. It’s the first mass stranding of this threatened species of dolphin there for more than fifty years. The authorities attempted to refloat the animals but as the distressing pictures make all too clear, those efforts have been unsuccessful.

The whales can weigh anywhere between 500kg to 3,000kg and some had sunk into the sand where they were stranded.

Only 90 of the 157 stranded marine animals appear to still be alive as rescue teams race against the clock to save them.
