State Rep. Melissa Hortman and State Sen. John Hoffman, who were targeted by a shooter on Saturday, were longtime members of Minnesota's state legislature.

Minnesota state Sen. John Hoffman lived in West Des Moines for nearly a decade and is credited with forming an active Democratic Party there.

State Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed, and state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife were injured, in what officials called a targeted attack.

Minnesota's DFL party was created on April 15, 1944, after the Minnesota Democrats merged with the Farmer-Labor Party, according to the party's official website. Former Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey is believed to be the founder of the party after serving a key role in the merger of the two affiliations.

State Rep. Melissa Hortman, the House’s Democratic leader and former speaker, was shot to death early Saturday.

MINNESOTA (TNND) — The man suspected of killing a Minnesota Democratic lawmaker and wounding another will face "an array of federal charges" after he "stalked his victims like prey" and "shot them in cold blood," according to acting U.S. Attorney Joe Thompson.

Police first responded to a call of a shooting at Hoffman's home in Champlin at around 2 a.m. Saturday, Drew Evans, the superintendent of the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, said in the briefing.
