Israel killed a top Hezbollah commander and other senior figures in the Lebanese movement in an airstrike on Beirut on Friday, vowing to press on with a new military campaign until it is able to secure the area around the Lebanese border.

CAIRO -- This week saw a dizzying escalation in the 11-month-old conflict between Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah. First came two days of exploding pagers and walkie-talkies used by Hezbollah — deadly attacks pinned on Israel that also maimed civilians around Lebanon.

The strike on a suburb of Lebanon’s capital killed Ibrahim Aqil, a prominent Hezbollah leader, and other senior commanders, Israel said. The attack left 14 people dead.
