A wildfire smoke advisory remains in effect this weekend for most of Southern California due to wildfires in Los Angeles County.

As wildfires continue to devastate Los Angeles, leaving thousands displaced and causing widespread destruction, experts urge long-term support and careful giving.

Nonprofit groups are working to distribute essential supplies to those impacted by the fires across the Los Angeles area.

The devastating blazes have killed at least 11 people and incinerated more than 12,000 structures since Tuesday.

Economic losses and damage are an estimated $135 billion and $150 billion, the costliest fire event in US history. Hurricane Helene in six states last fall caused up to $250 billion in damage.

State authorities previously listed the Palisades as one of the five Southern California areas with the highest concentration of potential wildfire risks. The community also is among the areas most impacted by an unavailability of insurance coverage.

While California is no stranger to major wildfires, they have generally been concentrated in inland areas that are not densely populated. That’s far from the case this time.
