In-person voting for the 2024 US presidential election begins Friday in three states — Virginia, South Dakota, and Minnesota, the home state of Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz.

If approved, the hand count rule would make Georgia the only state in the U.S. to implement such a requirement as part of the normal process of tabulating results, according to Gowri Ramachandran, the director of elections and security at New York University's Brennan Center for Justice,
