A Southern California city will pay $5.9 million to compensate Black and Latino families who were displaced from a neighborhood in the 1960s and decades later led a fight for restitution. The Palm Springs City Council approved the deal in a unanimous vote Thursday.

The city council voted to approve a multi-million dollar settlement to compensate families of color whose homes were destroyed by the city in the 1950s and 60s.

The city of Palm Springs, Calif., will pay nearly $6 million in reparations to Black and Brown families who were displaced from a neighborhood there during the 1960s. The tentative settlement will be split among families who had lived in the neighborhood known as Section 14.
