Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell announced he would step down from his leadership post earlier this year, ending his historic run.

John Thune, John Cornyn and Rick Scott are vying to succeed Mitch McConnell as the Republicans leader in the U.S. Senate.

McConnell is resigning his leadership role after a record 18 years in the position, just in time for Thune to become the Senate majority leader in January
