The Palm Springs City Council has approved a $5.9-million settlement with Black and Latino families whose homes were torn down decades ago.

Black and Latino families who were pushed out of a Palm Springs neighborhood in the 1960s reached a $5.9 million tentative settlement agreement with the city. The deal was announced Wednesday, and the city council will vote on it Thursday.

The Palm Springs City Council will vote tonight on the settlement offer. It comes decades after city employees and the Fire Department destroyed an estimated 197 homes on tribal land downtown.
