A devastating plane crash this week has drawn Wichita — known as the "air capital of the world" — and its aviation roots into the national spotlight.

WICHITA, Kan.—Kansas’ largest city was coming off a high this week.

A 20-year-old Wichita woman was among the 60 passengers of Flight 5342, her father said. Grace Maxwell, a Wichita native, was on her way back to college when the American Airlines jet collided with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter near Ronald Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C.

The City of Wichita held a vigil at noon Thursday for the victims of the American Airlines Flight 5342 plane that crashed with a Blackhawk helicopter in Washington Wednesday evening.

Spencer Lane, a 16-year-old figure skater from Rhode Island, and his mother, Christine Lane, 49, were among those killed in Wednesday night’s plane crash while en route from Wichita to Washington, D.C.

Several coaches and skaters with the United States figure skating team were on the flight from Wichita to Washington, D.C., that crashed Wednesday night, according to U.S. Figure Skating. The flight is not believed to have any survivors.
