Across Africa, and in the tiny nation of Eswatini, fury has erupted over the arrival of foreign deportees from the United States, after its government confirmed that migrants described by a Department of Homeland security spokesperson as “depraved monsters” had been sent to its prisons.

Eswatini faces backlash after accepting US deportees with criminal records, sparking outrage across Africa over sovereignty, safety, and secretive deals.

"The third countries that have received or been about to receive third-country deportees so far—El Salvador, Libya, South Sudan, now Eswatini—are marked by serious pre-existing human rights violations. This is a recipe for prolonged arbitrary detention or worse."

International law is clear that no one shall be sent anywhere where there are substantial grounds for believing that the person would be in danger of being subjected to serious human rights violations such as torture,
