The Ohio Senate on Wednesday approved a ban on transgender students using bathrooms that fit their gender identities and sent the measure to Republican Gov. Mike DeWine. The Republican-backed bill applies to public K-12 schools and institutions of higher education.

Ohio is just one step away from enacting a transgender bathroom restriction in schools after the Ohio Senate voted 24-7 on Wednesday to pass a bill that bars transgender students from using K-12 school or university bathrooms that correspond to their gender.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio Senate on Wednesday sent Gov. Mike DeWine a bill that started as noncontroversial legislation about college credit for high schoolers that, thanks to an amendment, now includes a ban on transgender students using locker rooms and bathrooms of the gender in which they identify.
