The Palmetto State has officially become the go-to destination for Americans packing up and starting fresh, according to a new study from U-Haul that analyzes data from 2024. South Carolina climbed to the top spot on the moving company’s annual ranking, knocking Texas to second place after the Lone Star State’s three-year reign.
Washington was ranked as the seventh-highest state for growth, while Oregon was toward the bottom of the list at No. 34.
North Carolina continues to be among the top states for people on the move. The Tar Heel state is No. 3 on the U-Haul Growth Index for 2024, which measures in- and out-migration based on one-way movers. Once again, states in the South once again dominate the top of the list.
Southern states continued to have the largest numbers of one-way U-Haul customers in 2024, with South Carolina topping the list for the first time. Texas, North Carolina, Florida and Tennessee round out the top five growth states.
U-Haul, the ubiquitous do-it-yourself moving company, reported that California had the fewest one-way haulers entering the state for the fifth consecutive year in 2024.
