The Alaska House voted Monday to adopt a resolution urging President Donald Trump to reconsider his executive order renaming the tallest peak in North America. The bipartisan House majority sought to quickly move a measure that would signal to the Trump administration that Alaskans opposed his idea of changing the name of the mountain from Denali back to Mount McKinley,

Alaskans oppose reverting the name of Denali to Mount McKinley by more than a two-to-one margin, according to a survey of residents conducted several days before President Donald Trump announced he would make the change during his second inauguration speech Monday.

Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy said Wednesday that he would seek out a conversation with President Donald Trump about his decision to rename Denali, the tallest mountain in the U.S. Trump ordered on Monday to change the name of the peak to Mount McKinley.

King and many others who live in the mountain's shadow say most Alaskans will never stop calling the peak Denali, its Alaska Native name, despite President Donald Trump's executive order that the name revert to Mount McKinley -- an identifier inspired by President William McKinley, who was from Ohio and never set foot in Alaska.

The mountain referred to as Denali by Alaska Natives for centuries was officially named Mount McKinley from 1917 until 2015, then changed to Denali in 2015 during President Barack Obama’s second term. Trump vowed during his first term in 2017 to change the name and followed through after he was reelected.

House Joint Resolution 4 by Maxine Dibert, a Fairbanks Democrat, is moot as worded since it urges “that action to rename the mountain not be taken.” The U.S. Department of Interior announced Friday the name change is now official and the U.S. Board on Geographic Names would begin making the change to federal documents and maps immediately.
