Junior Alvarado, who rode Sovereignty to victory in last weekend's Kentucky Derby, has been fined $62,000 and suspended two racing days for striking the horse more times than is allowed, horse racing authorities said on Saturday.

Junior Alvarado was given a $62,000 fine and suspended for two upcoming racing days for striking Sovereignty eight times with his riding crop during the Kentucky Derby.

Sovereignty not only won the Derby but did what 2019 winner Country House could not for trainer Bill Mott — he crossed first.
