North Korean hackers have stolen $1.5 billion in cryptocurrency in a single heist, making it the largest crypto hack on record, security experts told CNN.

North Korea drained a cryptocurrency exchange over the weekend, marking the biggest theft in digital currencies since their inception.

North Korean cyber criminals are feared to have carried out the “worst hack in history” after a $US1.19 billion ($2.36 billion) billion crypto heist was uncovered.

The hack that rocked the crypto market and saw most prices tumbling was called the "largest crypto theft of all time, by some margin," by Elliptic's Tom Robinson, co-founder and chief scientist. "The next largest crypto theft would be the $611 million stolen from Poly Network in 2021. In fact it may even be the largest single theft of all time."

Hackers affiliated with North Korea are believed to have carried out Friday’s (Feb 21) record US$1.5 billion hack of crypto exchange Bybit, according to security researchers. Cryptocurrency exchange Bybit said on Friday an attacker gained control of an ethereum (ETH) wallet and transferred around US$1.

Investigation revealed that BingX, & Phemex hacks were also connected to the same cluster as Bybit's, confirming the threat actor’s identity as the Lazarus group.
