On October 21, 2021, it was announced that UTSA had joined the American Athletic Conference and would start participating as a conference member in 2023. Other members of the AAC include North Texas, Rice, Tulsa, Army, FIU, FAU and South Florida.

Coached by former Longhorns assistant Jeff Traylor, UTSA has finished each of the last two seasons among the fastest-paced offenses in college football, averaging over 75 plays per game in both campaigns. To start 2024, the Roadrunners are operating at a 79.5 play-per-game average.

UTSA allowed 49 points last week against Texas State, which racked up 8.8 yards per play during the first half, when its starters were still in the game. Bobcats running back Lincoln Pare torched the Roadrunners to the tune of 109 yards and two touchdowns on just 11 carries, and UTSA managed just one sack and 12 quarterback pressures from 76 snaps.
