Junior Alvarado, who rode Sovereignty to victory at the Kentucky Derby earlier this month, has been fined and suspended for the overuse of his whip during the race.

Junior Alvarado was given a $62,000 fine and suspended for two upcoming racing days for striking Sovereignty eight times with his riding crop during the Kentucky Derby.

Junior Alvarado, the jockey who rode Sovereignty to victory at the 151st running of the Kentucky Derby earlier this month, has been issued a suspension and ordered to pay a hefty fine for excessive use of his riding crop during the race.
