A male Baird's tapir was born on Feb. 4. It's the first Baird's tapir born at the Houston Zoo, and the first baby for mother Moli and father Noah.

Baird's tapir is the largest land mammal in Central and South America. Baird's tapirs average 6.5 feet (2 m) in length. They are generally between 2.4 to 4 feet (73 to 120 cm) in height.

Amazingly it was a humongous Baird’s tapir, rivaling the size of a small cow. "The tapir appeared curious at our presence and approached within 15 feet of us as we stood, not moving.

The baby tapir’s name is Sandía, which means “watermelon” in Spanish. Metro Richmond Zoo says the Baird’s tapir is an endangered species native to Mexico and Central America.
