Perry the Donkey, Model for ‘Shrek,’ Dies at 30
Perry, a Jerusalem miniature donkey, was first brought to California to help calm polo ponies, but instead he nipped at them, according to the project’s website. So in 1997, the “spunky” 3-year-old was brought to Palo Alto’s Bol Park to live in a pasture set aside for donkeys to graze.

Donkey known as model for ‘Donkey’ in ‘Shrek’ dies
(CNN) - The donkey used to model the character of Donkey in the movie “Shrek” has died. Perry the donkey was 30 years old. The Barron Park Donkey Project in the San Francisco Bay Area says Perry was euthanized on Jan. 2 after his health worsened. Perry was well known at the park for his link to the 2001 “Shrek” movie.
