Forest fires in New York City are nearly unprecedented. None have been recorded in Prospect Park in recent history, and while wildfires are part of the natural cycle in some parts of the country, they’re extremely uncommon in urban forests.

Forty firefighters responded to a blaze near the LeFrak ice skating rink at about 2:40 p.m. and put out the flames by 3:22 p.m. An earlier fire nearby burned a 2-acre wooded area.

A 2-acre brush fire broke out in Prospect Park on Friday night amid a lengthy drought and windy conditions that have led to red flag warnings for nearly the entire tri-state area.
