The move comes a few months after Meta shut down Messenger’s stand-alone desktop apps for Windows and Mac.

Internal Meta documents revealed in a New Mexico court show that top executives, including content policy chief Monika Bickert, privately warned that encrypting Facebook Messenger and Instagram messages was “so irresponsible” and would drastically reduce the company’s ability to detect and report child exploitation,
