The White House is pursuing heavy fines from Harvard and other universities as part of potential settlements to end investigations into campus antisemitism, according to an administration official familiar with the matter.

It’s unclear whether Harvard will follow suit with its own agreement anytime soon — or that the measures Columbia agreed to are ones Harvard is willing to undertake.

Education Secretary Linda McMahon said Thursday she’s “hoping” that Harvard University will get wise and drop a lawsuit against the Trump administration for stripping $2.6 billion in funds away over concerns about campus antisemitism.

Christopher Rufo, the conservative activist, wants to expand the campaign to reshape higher education beyond elite schools.

Trump, who has halted billions in research grants to a slew of schools, has said he envisions the Columbia deal as the first of many such agreements. His education secretary, Linda McMahon, called it a blueprint for other institutions to follow.

The $200 million fine that Columbia University agreed to pay the Trump administration may be only the beginning. The administration is reportedly seeking steep payments from other elite schools that would allow them to continue receiving federal funding.
