California Gov. Gavin Newsom said his state will redraw its districts to establish more Democratic congressional seats.

California tried to play by a higher set of standards with its independent redistricting, Newsom said. An election in November could change that.

Gov. Gavin Newsom asked President Donald Trump to order Texas and other red states to abandon their efforts to redraw congressional boundaries, calling it an attempt to “rig” the 2026 midterms and an “affront to American democracy.”
